Watch the Warning Signs to Avoid Buying Flood-Damaged Used Car

by Alan Henry

Whenever a major storm leaves flooding in its wake, whether it?s a hurricane like Sandy or torrential rainfall anywhere in the world, the used car market is immediately full of used cars with descriptions that conveniently leave out the fact that it was in four feet of standing water only weeks prior to its sale. Thankfully it?s not too hard to see water damage, if you know what to look for.?

Our friends at The Consumerist put together a guide to inspecting used cars to make sure they haven?t been damaged by floodwater, especially if they?re late model vehicles. Keep an eye out for fogging inside of headlamps and taillights, and rust on the undercarriage that you normally wouldn?t see in newer vehicles. Also worth checking for dirt buildup in unusual areas, especially inside the vehicle, and any discolorations in the carpet.

Remember, even though a vehicle may seem okay, water damage can wreak havoc on electrical or mechanical components, so be wary when shopping for a used car, and if you?re buying from owner, make sure to get the car looked at by an independent mechanic before dropping any cash.
