Former Dolphins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells would have opposed the team serving as the subject of Hard Knocks, so it should be no surprise that a ?Parcells guy? would be reluctant about the assignment, too.
Tight end Anthony Fasano, a Parcells draft pick in Dallas for whom Parcells traded once the Tuna got to Miami, told Bob Papa and Ross Tucker of SiriusXM NFL Radio that Fasano wasn?t happy when he heard the news.
Fasano says plenty of his teammates weren?t, either.
?I wasn?t too thrilled to tell you the truth,? Fasano said. ?I think we were informed at a team meeting and there were a lot of groans when it was announced. But we?re going to have to deal with it and try not to let it be a distraction. ?But it?s going to be fun for the fans and should be interesting to see, even for some of the players, behind the scenes of the team.?
So why were there groans?
?I don?t know what kind of advantage it gives us as a football team having the show in there, and creating storylines that might not be storylines for the television show,? Fasano said. ?I don?t know if it is totally accurate in some situations, that I?ve heard in the past. But just looking at it from a football standpoint and having camp be a time for our team to get ready for a season that we?re going to try to make a run at the playoffs, I don?t know how much that?s helping our team.?
Here?s how it helps the team, Tony. Because the franchise can?t get attention the old-fashioned way (you know, by winning more games than it loses), the franchise has to resort to other strategies for putting asses in all those ugly orange seats.
Or at least in half of them.
So while coach Joe Philbin called it a ?football decision,? Fasano knows it wasn?t. ?There?s no football reason for doing it, unless a team plans to try to fool opponents about the team?s planned strategies and techniques for the coming season.
