Swimming New Zealand coach Mark Regan has resigned, just hours before the arrival of new high performance director Luis Villanueva from Spain.
Regan, who coaches world short-course champion Lauren Boyle, has handed in his written resignation, SNZ acting chief executive Mark O'Connor confirmed on Monday.
O'Connor says SNZ's board is disappointed at Regan's resignation, and will meet with the swimmers directly affected by his departure.
Boyle, 25, was the only New Zealand swimmer to reach the finals at last year's London Olympics, finishing fourth in the 800m freestyle and eighth in the 400m.
She also won gold at the world short-course championships in Turkey last month over 800m, and took bronze in the 400m.
Villanueva, head coach and high performance director of the Spanish Swimming Federation, was last month named to front SNZ's high performance programme.
He arrives in New Zealand on Tuesday, and it is expected he will take a leading role in recruiting Regan's replacement.
