The Personal Finance Scam | MetaFilter
I'm absolutely shocked, just shocked I tell you. Olen got her start in the personal finance world when she ran a series for the Los Angeles Times called Money Makeover, which involved helping regular folks connect with financial gurus sort out their personal finances.
?My question was, did we mislead people?? Olen said. ?That was really the genesis of the book.? As she found out, the personal finance industry is a swamp of conflicts of interest, shoddy advice, and prognosticators who profit off of the economic anxiety of everyday Americans.
?These empires of personal finance sort of start up, in part, as a way to explain it all to us,? she said, and they proliferate during hard economic times:

"People are desperate, and we live in this society where there?s deep shame around money, and there?s this idea that everybody should be able to make it?And so we feel very bereft and alone. Until very recently ? like the past year recently ? I would argue the average person really had no idea that they weren?t alone in this. The number in our 401(k)?s is roughly $25,000. That?s not enough money to get you through more than a year or two, nevermind a 30 year retirement. But everybody thought this was their individual failure. It didn?t occur to anybody that this was the average number and everybody was in on this. We?re all bereft here.
And the personal finance industry really preys on this idea that you can do it alone. And that you are alone in this. And that to not be able to do it is a personal failure. For instance, to give one very specific example, Dave Ramsey, who?s the big radio guru, has explicitly denied income inequality exists. And has told people they can choose not to participate in a recession."

TOP TEN REASONS TO HAVE STUDENTS BLOG ABOUT THEIR ...
About a year and a half ago, a few of my colleagues and I had our students begin blogging about their independent reading. Some students finished four posts a year. Some students finished ten. Some more. Below are my top ten takeaways from our students? blogging experience.
?
1.????? Authentic audience
?
Students rarely write for an audience other than the teacher or themselves (social media excluded). Not to say that writing for a teacher contains no value, it does, but when a student writes for an audience of 100 or 1,000, neat things start to happen. The ownership they feel over their words increases. The precision of their diction sharpens. Their text becomes immediately meaningful and relevant to them. Students tend to err on the side of caution when writing for an online audience, which is a valuable experience (I know that I am more careful in composing an email to the entire staff as opposed to a single teacher in my department). As teachers, we always try to emphasize the importance and the power of words, and by students actively crafting their ideas in an open forum, they begin to understand the authority of their opinions. They become empowered.

2.????? Community
?
Thanks to the influx of the YA genre, reading among teenagers is cooler now than ever. By having students blog, you are giving them a place to share their love of reading. Students are free to read each other?s blogs, comment on each other?s posts, and create a dialogue that may not have happened inside the traditional classroom. Here is an example from one of my students when I asked them about their blogging experience and interacting with other student bloggers:

?I like the community aspect of it. I can comment on others? [blogs], and they can comment on my blogs. I love sharing my writing and speaking about what I feel is important. I feel heard.? ? Lauren
?
If I can do something to make a student feel heard, I?ll do it.
?
3.????? Students find their voices
?
This pairs with #1, authentic audience. When students write deeply, about ideas they care about (in this case, books and reading), their voices organically begin to take shape. Their words start to sound like them and represent them as readers, but more importantly, as people. The focus is not on impressing the teacher by sounding ?smart? but rather on communicating honest and meaningful thoughts to dozens of people who value what they think. Writing about and reviewing literature requires as much voice as creating literature. The more they can write about their reading experiences, the more they understand what they really sound like.

4.????? Students read more
?
Helping students find reading they are interested in is no small feat. It can easily turn into a back-and-forth because, hey, what does the teacher know about what teenagers like? A recommendation from me is often received with a reluctant grin. A recommendation from one student to another, however, is internalized. Word of mouth (or in a blogger?s case, word of word?) is so influential, and I want to encourage that discovery for my readers. I can?t tell you how many blogs start out with, ?My friend told me about this book, and . . .? The transition from one book to the next is fluid. They even create a reading queue, something that took me 27 years to do.
?
5. ??Students read better
?
If a student knows that she will be writing on her reading experience, her focus now is not only on enjoying the text but on finding things to write about: how this book compares to others she has read, how she feels about the main characters, the author?s word choice, tone, if she would recommend it, etc. She is becoming a closer reader.
?
6.????? Communicating with authors
?
Thanks to the wonderful world of social media, students have a closer connection than ever to their literary celebrities. Many authors are on Twitter, including almost every YA author. Knowing that social media is a fantastic way to establish and build a fan base, authors are more than willing to communicate with their readers and check out reviews on blogs. John Green, Ellen Hopkins, and Simone Elkeles are among the authors who have responded to my students? blogs. Having a teacher say, ?Your blog is great!? is one thing. Having THE AUTHOR say, ?Your blog is great!? is in another world all together. For a student, what is more validating than that?
?
7.????? Teachers learning from examples
?
Once I lay the foundation for my students, they go in directions I couldn?t have imagined. They make me a better writer and a better reader. The connections they make, the technology they include, the books they read, the way they organize their ideas, I have no problem admitting that they ?school me? on a weekly basis. Because of student blogs that I?ve seen, I know how cool it is to include a Spotify playlist in a post, so the reader has music to listen to that sets the mood during his/her reading of the blog. I know that including a book trailer from YouTube is neat, but creating your own non-text element (through Animoto, Xtranormal, or another storytelling website) is more impressive and leads to . . .
?
8.????? ?Technological literacy
?
Online writing is a 21st-century skill. Whatever digital footprint our students leave (and they are leaving them as we speak), we want it to be positive. We want future employers to be able to find all the creative and insightful products our students can produce. We want all our students to be ?Googled Well.? When they graduate, we want them to have the skills necessary to be successful, to use technology to their advantage, and not just as a way to post pictures of themselves.

10. Oh the thinks you can think . . .
?
Eventually, blogging in class can lead to blogging outside of it. They may not make their blog during the school year or the year after they leave your class (although I have seen this happen). It might be much later, when they develop a love for the culinary arts and want to blog about their recipes. Or when they don?t have the physical excellence to play organized sports anymore but stay involved by writing about it. Or take a three-week backpacking trip through Europe and record every detail of their visit. There are innumerable topics that people can and will write about, and hopefully they will have the benefit of this positive experience to encourage them.

Ultimately, when all is said and done, my main goal as an English teacher is to develop lifelong readers and writers. Many of our students are already unofficial members of the Nerdy Book Club. Hopefully one day soon, they will make it official.
?

Tips On How To Study For Exams -Techniques For Studying
We all should learn various techniques for studying at a very young age. I was very lucky when I was young to have been raised by a mother who just happened to be a school teacher. For her books were her way of life. Books, pencils and erasers were her daily routine. Since her job was to teach, and she was good at her job, over time she had picked up different techniques for studying. She must have used these techniques for studying herself as her 98.1 college average would indicate. This high average also led me to believe that these were good tips on how to study for exams.
So what techniques for studying did she instill in me and her other students along the years.
Well one of her favourite tips on how to study for exams was to actually know the material you were being tested on. So for an elementary student this meant paying attention in the classroom and doing any homework that you were assigned. For a college student the guidelines were the same except for one major difference. In college attendance is not mandatory. In my mother's eye attendance was necessary. It was obvious by her college marks that she never missed a class.
If a student was struggling to learn the material one of the techniques for studying that often helped was to learn the material by associating it with something that you actually enjoyed. For example, if you are trying to learn math instead of adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing up just numbers add something that you like to the equation like cookies. I bet if you had 2 other friends and you had to split 12 cookies equally among the three of you, you would figure that out pretty quick.
Another good tip on how to study for exams is to follow a schedule. This technique for studying applies more to a college student then a student in the lower grades. College students have a lot on their plate. They are attending classes, meeting new friends and many of them will also have part time jobs. Making a schedule and sticking to it will help immensely. The last thing you want is to find yourself way behind on your studies because you have spent too much time socializing and partying. Although that is all a part of college life it is not the main part. You are planning for your future at this time so it is best to let your studies take a front seat to the partying and socializing.
Other tips on how to study for exams is of course to learn the material through memorization. Although this is a different technique for studying I personally am not a fan of it. Many people are quite capable of memorizing certain things without truly understanding it. I think it is much better to actually know and understand what you have been studying. Hopefully you will learn from these tips on how to study for exams and maybe come up with your very own techniques for studying.

Stocks soar again; major indexes up 2% for week
Stocks finished higher across the board Friday with the Dow setting a new record high and all three major averages up more than 2 percent for the week, boosted by a stronger-than-expected monthly government payrolls number.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished higher for the 10th consecutive Friday, lifted by McDonald's and Disney. Earlier in the session, the blue-chip index crossed above 14,400 for the first time.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also ended in positive territory. The Dow and S&P 500 are set to post their sixth-straight day of gains. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, closed below 13.
All key S&P sectors turned higher, led by consumer discretionary and industrials.

The U.S. added 236,000 jobs in February, while unemployment rate tumbled to 7.7 percent, the lowest since December 2008, according to the Labor Department, blowing past expectations for a gain of 160,000 and a rate of 7.9 percent.
"Overall, the number was uniformly strong and it shows the economy continues to be on the mend," said Paul Zemsky, CIO of multi-asset strategies at ING U.S. Investment Management. "But [stocks have] come quite far in a short amount of time so we're pausing a little bit?Today's move certainly doesn't make me bearish on the market and I still see significant upside ahead."
Investors watch the nonfarm payrolls number as a measure of economic recovery and to discern the Federal Reserve's policy moves. The central bank has said it will maintain its low interest rate rate policy at least until unemployment falls to 6.5 percent and inflation rises to 2.5 percent. However, the Fed's bond buying will likely stop well ahead of that if the Fed sees signs of sustained growth.

"It's way too premature to think about the Fed pulling back?the Fed needs to be absolutely certain that the economy is on the mend," said Zemsky.
Shortly after the European market close, Fitch downgraded Italy's credit rating to BBB from A- with a negative outlook, citing the uncertainty from February's inconclusive election results.
McDonald's said its same-store sales in February dipped 1.5 percent as consumers grew more cautious due to weak economic growth and higher taxes. Still, shares gained as the result beat expectations.
Google announced that its Motorola Mobility division will cut another 1,200 jobs or 10 percent of its workforce as the smartphone maker tries to return to profitability.
Among earnings, Foot Locker posted earnings that matched Wall Street expectations, while revenue edged past estimates. Still, shares declined.
Pandora surged after the music-streaming service edged past earnings and revenue expectations and handed in current-quarter and full-year 2014 revenue guidance that were better than Wall Street estimates. In addition, the company said its board has formed a search committee to look for a new CEO. At least six brokerages boosted their price target on the company.
Skullcandy plunged after the headphone maker posted earnings that missed expectations and warned that it expects to see a loss in the first quarter, disappointing analysts who had expected a gain.
Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley slumped after the Federal Reserve's latest stress test results revealed that both companies were near the bottom of the list of banks surveyed in terms of capital on hand. The only other bank that could see its capital fall below 6 percent under the stress scenario was Ally Financial.
Meanwhile, Citigroup rallied after the Fed said the company was one of the best banks poised to weather another financial crisis. In addition, Citi announced it had made a request to the Fed to repurchase up to $1.2 billion of its common equity, roughly the same amount it issues in employee stock each year. It did not request a raise to its $0.01 dividend.

Also on the economic front, wholesale inventories rose 1.2 percent in January, according to the Commerce Department. Economists polled by Reuters expected a gain of 0.3 percent. Meanwhile, sales at wholesalers declined 0.8 percent, against expectations for an increase of 0.1 percent.
In Asia, Japan's Nikkei jumped to a new four-and-half-year high in Friday's session, thanks to the yen's decline and revised growth figures showing the Japanese economy stabilized in the fourth quarter of 2012 after two quarters of a shallow recession.
China posted strong trade data which showed exports rising 22 percent in February from a year ago, though imports were weaker than forecast.

Impact vs Reach?

It?s spread through the web like a mantra that people do business with those that they know, like, and trust. Yet too many people look at all the tools and technology as a way to speed up this process rather than facilitate it.
As of two days ago some of you know me. If we?re friends from before I started this column, hopefully you like me. But I?d be a fool if I expected you to hire me? or buy anything from me. The real beauty of blogging, social media and our new technology is it enables us to build trust in a way that we never could before. This status update from Tom Ziglar about selling and trust is a true indicator of how important this is: ??
In Zig Ziglar?s (my Dad!) best seller Secrets of Closing the Sale he points out that the number one reason that people do not buy is a lack of trust. We are all in sales. We may be selling ideas, or selling our spouse or kids on something we want to do, or we may own a company that depends on sales to stay in business. According to Dad, if we are going to be successful in whatever we sell, we have to build trust.
Now, in the connection economy, where we are connected to almost everyone and everything, and transparency is no longer really a choice, trust is essential. Sure, people, governments, businesses, politicians, the media, etc will try to present their version of the truth, but in the connection economy this is becoming more and more difficult. And when trust is broken, in the connection economy everyone will soon know it.
So what are you going to do about it? Are you going to make scaling trust your number one priority? If so, will every action you take, and every word you speak, build trust? In order to live a consistently trustworthy life, you first must be a trustworthy person. This means that situational ethics is no longer an option for you. And this leads to an enormous challenge for many, the realization that there are absolutes.?
