Early ICS build leaks for the Verizon HTC Rezound

Have a hankering for some Ice Cream Sandwich on the HTC Rezound? Patience, folks, as Verizon's not pushing it just yet, but an early and very much unofficial build has been leaked to the folks at Android Police, who have in turn made it available to everyone.

You'll need to be on a stock bootloader -- HTC's unlocked bootloader won't work -- and you need to remember that this is likely to differ from what eventually gets pushed out. (When the official version will hit is still anyone's guess -- Verizon hasn't yet said.) So long as you're cool with that, hit the link below and get to flashing.

Heavy rucksacks storing up back problems for many school-kids

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Significant numbers of teens regularly carry rucksacks for school which top 10 to 15 per cent of their body weight and risk back pain and other related disorders, finds research published online in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

The problem is compounded by a predominantly sedentary lifestyle, say the researchers.

They assessed the back health of 1403 pupils between the ages of 12 and 17, drawn from 11 schools in one province in North Western Spain.

The teens were weighed twice - once without coats and other items likely to add weight, such as mobile phones, keys, and change, but with the rucksack/backpack they normally carried - and the second time without their rucksack.

Their height was also measured and information obtained from their teachers about lifestyle, focusing particularly on sporting activities at school, sedentary activities at home and any underlying health problems.

Information on back health was also sought, including a diagnosis of a spine disorder and the presence of back pain for more than 15 days in a row during the preceding year.

Most (92%) of the teens used a rucksack with two straps, which weighed almost 7 kg on average.

Well over half of the teens (61.5%) were carrying rucksacks that exceeded 10% of their own body weight, while almost one in five (18%) carried a rucksack that topped 15% of their body weight.

One in four (just under 26%) said that they had had back pain for more than 15 days during the previous year. The most common back problem (70% of those with a diagnosis) was scoliosis or curvature of the spine, followed by low back pain, and contractures - continuous and involuntary muscle contraction.

Girls were more at risk of back problems than boys and their risk seemed to increase with age.

Those teens whose rucksacks were among the top 25% in weight were 50% more likely to have back pain for in excess of 15 days than those whose backpacks weighed the least.

The authors point to previous research linking rucksacks to altered gait and posture, which, over the long term, can result in chronic pain and other back problems.

Many children transport excessively loaded backpacks, which is harmful to a developing body, note the authors, who urge doctors and teachers to start advising parents and children on the risks of carrying heavy bags to school every day.

The Rising Interest in Self Catering Holidays

With the rising costs in many countries in Europe there is a surge in interest in self catering holidays throughout the UK, with holidays booked for Europe this summer increasing in cost as the days go by. The holiday that was booked last year with the idea of long sunny afternoons sat in the beach bar drinking cheap booze are long gone?.

So what are people going to be doing this year? January is traditionally the busiest time of year for anyone in the holiday industry and despite the fact that there is a global credit crunch the majority of people are not going to give up their main family holiday, they are just looking for ways to cut the costs down, and the second and third trips will be closer to home, a cottage in Wales for the Easter Half Term period or a weekend by the seaside at one of Dorset's fabulous resorts for example.

There is an increasing popularity in self catering holidays, as this allows many holiday makers to budget for their annual family holiday, self catering is a home away from home, and gives you the luxury of staying in some of the worlds best resorts at a fraction of the price that a hotel would cost you and your family. Self Catering holidays allow you to experience beautiful homes in beautiful places, and it doesn't mean that you have to stay in all the time, booking a self catering holiday allows you the freedom to come and go from your holiday accommodation as you please, save money on eating out and your evening's entertainments.

And one of the growing phenomena's of self catering holidays is the rise of booking the accommodation direct from the properties owner, an up and coming company in this sector is Self Property Rental, an international company that offers holiday rentals direct from the owner from all over the world.

Speaking to managing director Mr Daryl Self, he explains that the rise of his company is due to the popularity of self catering holidays, "people that go on holiday want to have the option to do what they want, and to save some money, for instance there are a number of properties available on Self Property Rental that are ideal for large parties and family groups, by sharing the cost between you it really takes the cost of your holiday down, as an example we have a 5 bedroom villa available on the beautiful island of Menorca, that sleeps up to 12 people, for peak season you can rent this villa direct from the owner for ?1900, divide that by twelve and that is just ?158 per person to stay in superb accommodation at the height of the season".

When booking your summer holiday this year, think about all the options that are available and you can grab a bargain direct from the owner for some great holiday properties available both here in the UK and in Europe and the rest of the world.

Climate Concerns Ebb in Face of Hard Times, Study Says

In recent years, people seem to care less and less about climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions, with surveys showing declines among those who see it as a real problem and worry about the effects.

A recent analysis of public opinion data in the United States and Europe offers an explanation: tough economic times associated with the Great Recession.

Using survey data going back to the late 1990s, researchers looked at other alternative explanations ? media coverage that includes skeptical views on climate change and short-term fluctuations in weather ? could not fully explain the dramatic decline since 2008, when the recession began, according to two researchers. ?

About two decades of Gallup survey data show a strong correlation between unemployment rates and the perception that the media "exaggerate the seriousness of global warming," they found. Even in Europe, where concern and acceptance of climate change science is higher than in the United States, concern declined after the recession hit, according to them. ??

This environment versus prosperity paradigm isn't new.

"The pattern is consistent with more than 40 years of public opinion about environmental policy," write Lyle Scruggs and Salil Benegal of the University of Connecticut in an article published online recently in the journal Global Environmental Change.

People believe addressing climate change will stifle economic growth, and when faced with tough economic times, people want growth. They respond to the conflicting needs by shifting their beliefs about climate change, according to Scruggs and Benegal.??

"Given what we know about recent and historic patterns, it seems probable that climate change opinion will rebound as the economy, and more specifically the job situation, improves," they write. "Both would obviously improve more quickly if planetary stewardship can become a catalyst for economic recovery and transformation, and not instinctively seen as a barrier to that goal."
