US, Germany to Russia: Don't send Assad missiles

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The United States and Germany on Friday warned Russia not to endanger a planned peace conference for Syria or alter the balance of power in the Middle East by providing an advanced air defense system to President Bashar Assad's embattled regime.

Secretary of State John Kerry and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said the transfer of S-300 missile from Russia to Syria would prolong the country's civil war, imperil attempts to form a transitional government through negotiation and hurt Israel's strategic interests.

"It is not helpful to have the S-300 transferred to the region while we are trying to organize this peace (conference) and create peace," Kerry told reporters at a joint news conference with Westerwelle after they met at the State Department.

"We ask them again not to upset the balance within the region with respect to Israel," he said. "The weaponry that is being provided Assad whether it is an old contract or not, has a profoundly negative impact on the balance of interests and the stability of the region and it does put Israel at risk. It is not in our judgment responsible because of the size of the weapons, the nature of the weapons and what it does to the region in terms of Israel's security, so we hope that they will refrain from that in the interests of making this peace conference work."

Westerwelle called on Russia not to "spoil" the conference, which was planned for Geneva next month but has been delayed until July at the earliest.

"Don't endanger the peace conference in Geneva," he said. "The delivery of weapons to the Assad regime is totally wrong ... It is the wrong message which has been sent by our colleagues in Russia to the world and to the region by delivering S-300s or other parts of weapons."

Kerry and Westerwelle spoke a day after Assad suggested that his regime received a first shipment of the state-of-the-art anti-aircraft system, which would reduce pressure on it to negotiate with the opposition, make foreign intervention more difficult and alarm Israel. The United States has made Israel's qualitative military edge one of its prime strategic interests in the region.

Russian officials have said they will supply the S-300s to Syria under an existing contract. They have also said that they will try to convince the Assad regime to participate in the Geneva peace talks. But the Syrian opposition has said it will not attend the conference while massacres are continuing.

Kerry said he believed the opposition would attend the meeting once it straightens out questions about its leadership.

He also warned anew that the use of chemical weapons is a "red line" for the Obama administration. At the same time, he said intelligence and evidence that such weapons have, in fact, been used, is still being vetted for 100-percent certainty.

"We are doing our due diligence, as we should do given past experience, to make certain that the intelligence is correct, that the evidence is real and then make judgments that are appropriate," Kerry said.

DARPA builds an Android-based, low-cost ground sensor (video)

DARPA builds a Androidbased ground sensor

This isn't an ignominious box you're looking at -- it's the potential future of military sensors. The device is DARPA's first reference design for a ground sensor based on ADAPT (Adaptable Sensor System), a modular Android processing core that does the hard work for surveillance gear. The mobile technology inside is miserly enough to run on its own power, and smart enough to simplify both networking and remote control. More importantly, it should be cheap: DARPA expects to cut sensor development times from several years to less than one, with lower costs to match. The agency starts field testing the ground sensor this summer, and it's already contemplating air- and sea-based ADAPT designs. Catch an example of DARPA's airborne sensor experiments after the break.

There's Finally a Way to Keep Robots From Walking Like Toddlers

As impressive as Honda's Asimo robot is, it still walks like a small child perpetually taking its first careful steps. So to ensure that one day robots will be able to fight our wars, clean our homes, and dominate us at sports, researchers at the Humanoid Robotics Institute at Waseda University have redesigned their robot's lower legs to function more naturally like a human's.

Official: New bank agency needs treaty change

(AP) ? A top official with Germany's central bank says the EU will have to change its basic treaties if a proposed a new agency to wind down busted banks is to "stand on firm ground."

Bundesbank vice-president Sabine Lautenschlaeger said in a speech Tuesday that while European Union definitely needs the agency, but "a change in the basic law is needed."

A treaty change could take years and delay a key part of European banking reform aimed at preventing future crises. European officials say the new agency would keep banking failures and subsequent bailouts from dumping added debt on national governments ? a key problem in the eurozone's financial and economic crisis.

Lautenschlaeger's statements backed the position taken by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.

John C. Reilly Offered Guardians of the Galaxy Role

John C Reilly Carnage Guardians of the Galaxy: John C. Reilly Offered Key Role In Marvel Cinematic Universe

The S.H.I.E.L.D. organization noticeably?absent in the story of?Iron Man 3 is making a return in a big way, both this fall in Joss Whedon?s?Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. live-action TV series, picked up for a full season by ABC, and next year in?Captain America: The Winter Soldier where S.H.I.E.L.D. will take center stage.

The group, headed up by Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), will expand to see many new faces over the next two years. As we learned this weekend, it may get a few more is the most unexpected of places:?Oscar-nominated actor and funnyman John C. Reilly has been offered a role in?Guardians of the Galaxy as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

HitFix has the scoop which not only details the potential new casting addition, but many of the possible story and character elements of the film that writer and director James Gunn?s screenplay may draw from. They also have word that?Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are being brought in to help polish the script.

Guardians of the Galaxy Concept Art 570x248 Guardians of the Galaxy: John C. Reilly Offered Key Role In Marvel Cinematic Universe

Markus and McFeely have solidified their roles in the Marvel family and not unlike overseer and?Avengers 2 writer/director Joss Whedon, have a large part in shaping Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They got their start with Marvel having co-written?Captain America: The First Avenger?and have since helped co-write Thor: The Dark World?and?Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Guardians of the Galaxy is their fourth Marvel film.

By utilizing the same family of writers Feige forming a team of sorts, using?Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for multiple films, all overseen by Joss Whedon. Drew Pearce who wrote the now-canned?Runaways for Marvel Studios was brought in to help write?Iron Man 3, and almost had a gig helping polish the?Guardians of the Galaxy screenplay as well. Don?t be surprised to see his name attached to one of the Phase Three Marvel films.

Nova Marvel Comics Art Guardians of the Galaxy: John C. Reilly Offered Key Role In Marvel Cinematic Universe

As for the new details on?Guardians of the Galaxy, HitFix?s source claims that?John C. Reilly ? a Disney favorite for starring in Wreck-It Ralph -?is in talks for the role of?Rhomann Dey. Marvel Comics readers may know Dey as the alien leader of Nova Corps who passed on his power and role to the human Richard Rider ? the current Nova and leader of the Corps, but after seeing?Iron Man 3, we know better than to assume Marvel Studios is going closely follow character and story arcs from the books. The film version of?Rhomann Dey will (as the report indicates) be human, serving as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, a handler of sorts for the Guardians.

Knowing that the film will take place ?95% in space? according to James Gunn and Marvel Studios Pres Kevin Feige, the role may be limited, but it?ll be recurring as a long-term contract for multiple pictures. HitFix describes Dey as the Agent Coulson of the Guardians, but he?s not the only key human character. He may have a partner also?liaising for the Guardians of the Galaxy and the names of interest include?Hugh Laurie, Alan Rickman and Ken Watanabe. All four actors would be welcome additions to the Marvel franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy Comic Rocket Raccoon Wal Russ 570x276 Guardians of the Galaxy: John C. Reilly Offered Key Role In Marvel Cinematic Universe

As for the characters officially revealed to star in?Guardians of the Galaxy, a few more details about them have emerged as well:

  • Rocket Raccoon will be joined by fellow intelligent animal from the planet?Halfworld, Wal Russ (pictured above), when he first appears in the movie. The two are guards of?The Keystone Quadrant, a sectioned off star system for the criminally insane where animals were genetically engineered with bipedal walking abilities and human-level intelligence to serve as caretakers. Moviegoers may be in for some wacky characters (see: Cosmo the space dog).
  • The other key piece of info is yet another villain rumor, joining the list that already includes The Collector, The Controller and most recently, Ronan the Accuser. Thanos will be involved in the film, much like he will for?The Avengers 2, but he won?t be the main antagonist, instead serving as the big baddie behind the scenes. HitFix claims that Michael Rooker?s?Yondu Udonta is the main bad guy (described as a ?space pirate?), a major deviation from the comics where Yondu is actually one of the original Guardians and a good guy.
  • Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies) may not be playing the main villain either as previously reported, as his character may start as a threat but ?switch sides? during the film. We don?t know who he?s playing yet but he may be being set up for a future spinoff film of his own, hinting that he could be playing someone like?Captain Mar-Vell (who has connections with Ronan the Accuser and the Kree alien empire) or Adam Warlock (a crucial character involved with the Infinity Gauntlet Thanos is after ? as seen in Thor). The other, less likely possibility is that he?s playing Black Bolt, leader of?The Inhumans which may be a Phase Three Marvel film.

At this stage, fans who followed the development of all the post-Iron Man films know how out of control rumors and speculation can become. Knowing that Marvel Studios is not restricted to remaining faithful to the comics means that any character can be altered, dropped or merged with others, so predicting how James Gunn?s ?twisted? story will play out is impossible. The film hasn?t even begun shooting, let alone finished casting, and we already have four different rumored villain possibilities not including Thanos.

Who would you like Lee Pace to play and what villain should serve as the primary antagonist in?Guardians of the Galaxy?

___

Iron Man 3?releases May 3, 2013,?Thor: The Dark World?on November 8, 2013,?Captain America: The Winter Soldier?on April 4, 2014,?Guardians of the Galaxy?on?August 1, 2014,?The Avengers 2?on May 1, 2015,?Ant-Man?on November 6, 2015, and?Doctor Strange?sometime after that.

Celebrating Our Non Political Heroes Lastupdate:- Tue, 28 May ...

Carlyle has famously argued that it is heroes that make destiny of nations. Applying this insight to our situation may be difficult. For most Kashmiris, we have hardly any heroes, at least in last few centuries. However, leaving politics aside we do come across some great leaders in administration or academics whose contribution we need to recognize. But unfortunately we, as a community, are more critics than admirers or sympathetic observers. We generally dont award great souls except cultural or literary figures, other important personalities go unrecognized. I suggest civil society should institute some awards and not leave to governments only to occasionally recognize contribution of some great souls.
Today I recall three great souls who have played key role in the development of sheep sector in our State. The first is Dr Banday whose contribution was so phenomenal that even the Centre had to take notice and confer upon him Padam Shri. The second was his successor and associate whom he groomed - Dr G.N. Wani. The third one groomed by Dr Wani is the just retired Dr Javid Ahmad Khan whose contribution will be appreciated in the times to come. I today briefly discuss the last one of this trinity.
Dr Khan is recognized as the architect of modern sheep husbandry. As an illustrious heir of Dr Wani he has been instrumental in shaping the policies, schemes and plans that sheep husbandry department is currently pursuing. Himself holding a Masters Degree in veterinary sciences he has been amongst the most tech-savvy directors of last two decades.? He has played important role in popularization of RKVY scheme, orienting it in such a way as to suit traditional ethos. Appropriating the concept of aadij in which people gave animals but retained ownership and part of produce he has been able to see the fruit of his great work in the form of enormous popularity of the scheme as the phase of retrieval has already begun and people are heartily cooperating. This move shall one day sustain the department independently as the Department shall be able to own and distribute thousands of animals to interested farmers and in the process boost local economy and create jobs. He has been instrumental in attracting and sustaining the interest of entrepreneurs for large scale modernization and development of sheep industry. It is thanks to these efforts that we shall soon see sheep based production and marketing companies. Now sheep industry is no longer exclusively restricted to the poor sections of society and we are in a position to invest good capital for the development of the sector. Dr Khan patronized some budding entrepreneurs which, I think, has the potential to transform the whole sector on modern lines. Dr Khan has been playing pivotal role in revitalizing the department on almost all fronts. The only sector he couldnt heavily contribute to is revitalizing government breeding farms. Perhaps he had too short a stay for achieving it; though it must be noted that he had planned importation of new livestock from foreign countries to boost the farms and initiate new hitherto unprecedented innovations. It is hoped that the new directors shall continue to pursue this important point that has been a long standing demand of people.? It is under the patronage of Dr Khan that key publications including periodical newsletter, Sheep Breeders Manual, Periodical Magazine and research journal Kashmir Veterinary Journal were published. He has thus been able to bridge the gap between SKUAST-K and development department. It is thanks to him that the Department has revived seminar culture and many seminars have already been organized. He had long term dream for the development of the sector. Without necessarily condoning every administrative move (on a few of which there could be different opinions) we must gratefully acknowledge multiple contributions of Dr Khan. As the last great embodiment of the legacy of the founding fathers - Dr Banday and Dr Wani - he even went much beyond them by adapting their vision according to the latest challenges. It is only now a matter of time that we will have modernized sheep sector earning huge revenue for the State, new breeds that will be giving at least two lambs a year, elite ram farms for exporting germplasm to neighboring countries in great numbers, Qurbani/mutton banks etc. All these will be materialized thanks to foundation laid by Dr Khan. Dr Khan stood upon the shoulders of previous giants and other preceding directors from whom he absorbed the best. It is partly thanks to him that our field animals are able to replace elite rams for Australia that cost us around 50,000/animals four decades back. What a contribution that amounts to injecting millions of dollars into economy annually.? The fact that the government has already prioritized livestock sector is partly recognition of the efforts of our administrators.
One dream of development departments is still unrealized and that is establishment of a Veterinary University for support in research inputs. Much of the potential of livestock sector is still unrealized and it is only investment in research that can make up the difference.? The success story of development of crossbreeding programs and popularization of sheep farming are perhaps the first option as many new entrepreneurs call for huge research support through proposed Sheikhul Alam University of Animal Sciences.

Faith Healing Parents Charged With Murder - Freethought Blogs

Remember the parents in Pennsylvania who had a second child die from an entirely treatable condition while on probation for doing the same thing to another child? They?ve now been charged with third degree murder. They also face a separate hearing for violating the probation.

The couple are charged with the third-degree murder of Brandon Scott Schaible. The baby, just over 7 months old, died in April of bacterial pneumonia and dehydration.

?Sadly, there is only one reason for it: his parents,? District Attorney Seth Williams said at a news conference. ?Instead of caring and nurturing him, they ultimately caused his death by praying over his body rather than taking him to the doctor.?

A medical examiner ruled Tuesday that Brandon?s death April 18 was a homicide, the Philadelphia Daily News reported. The medical examiner said the child began experiencing difficulty breathing, irritability and decreased appetite three days before he died.

At the time of their infant son?s death, the couple were already on probation for the 2009 death of their 2-year-old son Kent, who died after they decided to simply pray for his recovery rather than take him for medical care.

They belong to a church that teaches that it is a sin to go to the doctor because it proves that you lack faith in God to heal. Faith is not some vaguely good thing, it?s downright dangerous in many cases.

Rockets hit south Beirut after Hezbollah vows Syria victory

By Dominic Evans

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two rockets hit a Shi'ite Muslim district of southern Beirut on Sunday and wounded several people, residents said, a day after the leader of Lebanese Shi'ite militant movement Hezbollah said his group would continue fighting in Syria until victory.

It was the first attack to apparently target Hezbollah's stronghold in the south of the Lebanese capital since the outbreak of the two-year conflict in neighboring Syria, which has sharply heightened Lebanon's own sectarian tensions.

One of the rockets landed in a car sales yard next to a busy road junction in the Chiah neighborhood and the other hit an apartment several hundred meters away, wounding five people, residents said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility and the army said it was investigating who was behind the attack.

A Lebanese security source said three rocket launchers were found, one of which had failed to launch, in the hills to the southeast of the Lebanese capital, about 5 miles from the area where the two rockets landed.

The rocket strikes came hours after Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, a powerful supporter of President Bashar al-Assad in neighboring Syria's civil war, said his fighters were committed to the conflict whatever the costs.

"We will continue to the end of the road. We accept this responsibility and will accept all sacrifices and expected consequences of this position," he said in a televised speech on Saturday evening. "We will be the ones who bring victory".

Syria's two-year uprising has polarized Lebanon, with Sunni Muslims supporting the rebellion against Assad and Shi'ite Hezbollah and its allies standing by Assad.

Until recently, Nasrallah insisted that Hezbollah had not sent guerrillas to fight alongside Assad's forces, but in his speech on Saturday he said it had been fighting in Syria for several months to defend Lebanon from radical Islamist groups he said were now driving Syria's rebellion.

QUSAIR OFFENSIVE

Hezbollah forces and Assad's troops launched a fierce assault last week aimed at driving Syrian rebels out of Qusair, a strategic town close to the Lebanese border which rebels have used as a supply route for weapons coming into the country.

Nasrallah's speech was condemned by Sunni Muslim former Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri who said that Hezbollah, set up by Iran in the 1980s to fight Israeli occupation forces in south Lebanon, had abandoned anti-Israeli "resistance" in favor of sectarian conflict in Syria.

"The resistance is ending by your hand and your will," Hariri said in a statement. "The resistance announced its political and military suicide in Qusair".

Hariri is backed by Saudi Arabia, which along with other Sunni Muslim Gulf Arab monarchies has strongly supported the uprising against Iranian-backed Assad, whose minority Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Lebanon, haunted by its own 1975-1990 civil war and torn by the same sectarian rifts as its powerful neighbor, has sought to pursue a police of "dissociation" from the Syrian turmoil.

But it is struggling to deal with nearly half a million refugees who have fled the fighting in Syria and its northern city of Tripoli has seen frequent explosions of violence between Sunni Muslims and the small Alawite community.

At least 25 people have been killed in Tripoli over the last week in street fighting which has coincided with the battle for Qusair across the border.

Deadheading spring-flowering shrubs improves next year's blooms ...

Spring-flowering shrubs were full of color this spring, but now that they are done, home gardeners should start thinking about boosting next year's bloom.

One of the best things you can do for your spring-flowering shrubs and some perennials is to remove the spent blooms, a technique called deadheading. Deadheading is great for plants because it prevents them from going to seed, which is a waste of energy for the plant.

Once the bloom is finished, you can use your fingers (or a pair of sharp hand pruners) to remove the flowers before they begin to produce seed. Take rhododendron for example. If you pinch off the spent flowers, there will be more energy to produce larger flower buds for next spring on the new growth. On some shrubs like lilacs, the spent flowers and seedpods are not attractive.

Some perennials and shrubs such delphiniums, veronica and weigela can even bloom a second time later on in the season if deadheaded right after the first bloom is finished. Not all flowering shrubs will bloom a second time but all will benefit from deadheading.

If you have roses in your landscape, it is extremely important to deadhead them to prolong the blooming season as well as strengthen the plant prior to winter.

Some shrubs such as viburnums, silky or red-stemmed dogwoods and shadbush produce seeds or fruit that are attractive and beneficial for songbirds, and should not be deadheaded following bloom.

For more information about deadheading and pruning shrubs, visit online http://extension.psu.edu/ or for a copy of Pruning Ornamental Plants visit http://pubs.cas.psu.edu/FreePubs/pdfs/AGRS095.pdf.

Trans fighter Fallon Fox wins unimpressively (Video)

Considering Fallon Fox won her first two fights in the first round, it was expected for the first openly trans fighter to walk through her next opponent, Allanna Jones at Championship Fighting Alliance on Friday. In her first nationally televised bout, Fox won with a submission in the third round, but it was not the overwhelming win that oddsmakers were expecting.

You can watch the full fight in the video above. Fox and Jones both made mistakes like keeping their hands too low and holding their chin out too far throughout the bout. They looked like two inexperienced fighters because that's what they are.

Much of the controversy that surrounded Fox was the perception that since she was born a man, she would have clear advantage over her opponents. As Sherdog's Jordan Breen pointed out, "So, did anyone watch that and think, 'Wow, what an insurmountable advantage Fallon Fox has, no one could ever beat her!'?" She beat a 2-1 fighter, but not soundly. When she goes up in level of competition, as she will do in the next round of the CFA tournament, she will have a hard time.

Sexual assaults threaten military, Obama says

President Barack Obama speaks at the U.S. Naval Academy commencement ceremony in Annapolis, Md., May 24, 2013.??President Barack Obama on Friday warned that sexual assault in the military amounts to a national security threat as he enlisted graduating Navy ensigns and Marine second lieutenants at the U.S. Naval Academy in a campaign to stamp it out.

?Those who commit sexual assault are not only committing a crime, they threaten the trust and discipline that makes our military strong,? Obama said in remarks at the school?s commencement in Annapolis, Md. ?That?s why we have to be determined to stop these crimes, because they?ve got no place in the greatest military on earth.?

Obama tied the recently disclosed spate of sex assaults in the military to other scandals in which ?the misdeeds of some? hurt the public?s faith in important institutions?from Wall Street to politicians to the civil service. He never named the IRS, but plainly alluded to wrongdoing there.

?It?s no secret that, in recent decades, many Americans have lost confidence in many of the institutions that help shape our society and our democracy,? he said.

?As we?ve seen again in recent days, it only takes the misconduct of a few to further erode the people?s trust in their government. That?s unacceptable to me, and I know it?s unacceptable to you."

The president also warned those about to ?assume the burden of leadership? and, with it, the responsibility for the lives of those under their command that ?our military remains the most trusted institution in America.?

?And yet we must acknowledge here, even in our military, we?ve seen how the misconduct of some can have effects that ripple far and wide,? he said.

?In our digital age, a single image from the battlefield of troops falling short of their standards can go viral and endanger our forces and undermine our efforts to achieve security and peace,? he said.

North Korea says will take 'positive steps' for peace

By Terril Yue Jones and Sui-Lee Wee

BEIJING (Reuters) - A North Korean envoy told China's president on Friday that his reclusive country was willing to take "positive actions" to ensure peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, as China steps up diplomatic efforts to bring Pyongyang back to talks.

But Choe Ryong-hae, a special envoy of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, made no offer to abandon North Korea's nuclear program. The United States insists North Korea takes meaningful steps on denuclearization before there can be dialogue.

Choe met Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping, in the highest-ranking visit by an official from Pyongyang in about six months.

Chinese state media said Choe presented a hand-written letter from Kim to Xi at Beijing's Great Hall of the People. Media provided no details of its contents.

"North Korea is willing to make joint efforts with all parties to appropriately resolve related issues through multilateral dialogue and consultations like the six-party talks, and maintain peace and stability on the peninsula," the official Xinhua news service cited Choe as telling Xi.

"To this end, North Korea is willing to take positive actions," Choe added.

Xi told Choe that the denuclearization of the peninsula was an aspiration of all peoples and an inevitable trend, saying problems should be resolved through talks.

"China hopes all sides exercise calm and restraint, push for a lessening of tensions, restart the six-party talks process and make unremitting efforts ... for long-lasting peace and stability," Xi said.

China has repeatedly urged North Korea to return to the so-called six party talks process, aimed at denuclearization.

The United States and its allies believe the North violated a 2005 aid-for-denuclearization deal by conducting a nuclear test in 2006 and pursuing a uranium enrichment program that would give it a second path to a nuclear weapon in addition to its plutonium-based program.

The six-party aid-for-disarmament talks, involving the two Koreas, the United States, Japan, Russia and host China, collapsed in 2008 when the North walked away from the deal.

China, North Korea's only real ally, has been pushing for a return to talks after weeks of bellicose words from Pyongyang following new United Nations sanctions after the North's third nuclear test in February.

Russia welcomed North Korea's declaration of readiness to return to talks and said it deserved a "a positive assessment", the Interfax news agency quoted Russian Foreign Ministry special envoy Grigory Logvinov as saying.

China has looked on nervously at the ratcheting up of tension, fearful a misstep could plunge the peninsula into war which could envelop northeastern China.

IMPATIENCE

Fan Chonglong, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, expressed that worry in a meeting with Choe.

"In recent years, the state of affairs around the Korean peninsula nuclear issue frequently turns into one escalation of tensions after another," China's Xinhua state news agency quoted Fan as saying.

"The conflicting strategies of all parties have intensified, jeopardizing peace," Fan said.

China has increasingly expressed its impatience with North Korea, signing up for the new U.N. sanctions and curtailing Chinese banks' contacts with their North Korean counterparts.

Choe told Fan that peace could not be assured although North Korea wanted it in order to build the country, and it was willing to work with all sides in solving problems, Xinhua said.

"The situation on the Korean peninsula and in Northeast Asia is complex and extraordinary, and there is no guarantee of peace," Choe was quoted as saying.

Cai Jian, a North Korean expert at Shanghai's Fudan University, said that while such high-level contact between the two countries was important, especially following the chilling of ties, he did not see a quick resumption of six-party talks.

"The U.S. says if North Korea doesn't clearly renounce its nuclear program, it won't return to the six-party talks. But if the international community doesn't hold peace talks with North Korea, then North Korea will use that time to develop its nuclear weapons and missiles," Cai said.

Choe and his entourage spent three days in Beijing in full military regalia, in contrast to the mostly civilian leaders he met, though he changed out of his uniform to meet Xi.

"Sending Choe in military uniforms as an envoy to China means North Korea still wants to stick to their right to have a nuclear arsenal," said Chang Yong-seok, a senior researcher at the Institute for Peace Affairs at Seoul National University.

Choe was dispatched at this time because North Korea is mindful of Xi's talks with U.S. President Barack Obama in early June, Chang said.

Xi is due to hold his first meeting with Obama in the United States and North Korea is expected to be high on the agenda.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye plans to make a state visit to China at the end of June, presidential spokeswoman Kim Haing said on Friday.

"Though China says it can't do everything alone, China still is a country that can exercise considerable influence" over North Korea, Park said during a meeting with U.S. security experts on Thursday.

Mailbox launches an iPad app, but Gmail poses a greater threat than ever

In early February, Mailbox hit the App Store and impressed millions with its refreshing take on email visualization and triage. An epic waitlist added fuel to the fire, since most people had to wait weeks to gain access to the cloud-powered email app. Mailbox?s impact was so forceful that Dropbox didn?t even wait a month to sweep in and acquire the company within weeks of its launch.

Is an iPad app enough to keep up Mailbox's momentum?

Today, just over three months later, the company is releasing an iPad version of its app, but the Mailbox furor has all but died out. The email app bubble is still bubbling, evidenced by the launch of a several apps like Mail Pilot and Evomail, but these apps face increasing competition from Google itself, which powers the actual email service most of these apps rely on. After years of relative stagnation on the web and no mobile app, Gmail has been picking up the pace and rapidly adding features like the ability to send money to a friend and RSVP to events. Meanwhile, in the "Productivity" category of the App Store, Gmail for iOS is the number one ranked free app, while Mailbox is ranked number 53. Instead of breaking into a wholly untapped market on Android where its focus on design and speed would be well-received, Mailbox chose to build an iPad app. Is it enough to keep the ball rolling?

Mailbox CEO Gentry Underwood declined to talk about how many people are using the app. "I think about it like a stock price," he says. "As soon as you?re publicly traded, everyone?s making short-term decisions based on short-term gains. I want to be smart about making long-term decisions." The company?s first goal was to address one of the top requests from current Mailbox users: a companion iPad app. Mailbox for iPad is little more than a blown-up version of the iPhone app, ported feature-for-feature, button-for-button to the big screen. All the swipes you?ve come to know are here, as is the ability to snooze items for later, browse labels, and quickly reply to emails. The app sends and receives emails in a pinch, as you would expect. The only real difference from the mobile app is that the list of emails is on the left, and the content of emails is on the right, like in the iPad?s default Mail app. There are no signs yet of Dropbox's influence on the app.

"What are you asking us for? What?s best for Mailbox users?"

Mailbox?s new parent company thus far hasn?t pressured Underwood to integrate its storage features, or even to address the various platforms it has a presence on like PC, Mac, and Android. In fact, it?s been quite the contrary. When the Mailbox team first arrived at Dropbox headquarters in the SoMA neighborhood of San Francisco, it quickly became inundated with ideas from Dropboxers about how to integrate the two apps. "We put all the ideas on a big foam-core board and set up a meeting with Drew [Houston] and Arash [Ferdowsi]," says Underwood. "We asked about what was most important, and what we should prioritize. Drew looked at me with a surprised look and said, ?What are you asking us for? What?s best for Mailbox users??"

Down the line, Underwood does see places where Dropbox and Mailbox could integrate, like for attaching files to emails. Dropbox, in fact, already has an API in place that lets iOS developers embed Dropbox file-pickers inside their apps. But for now, Underwood is more concerned with adding functionality to Mailbox. One feature that?s in consideration would let users "snooze" emails not just to specific dates and times, but to specific devices. For example, you could snooze an email to your iPad, since that?s where you check email for an hour before bed.

"Getting locked out? It?s not something we worry much about."

As Mailbox adds new features, so will Gmail. Mute, one mail triage feature that many Gmail users hold dear, is still not a part of Mailbox. A worrisome scenario emerges where Mailbox falls behind as Gmail adds proprietary features only its users can take advantage of. Fortunately for Mailbox, new Gmail features don?t affect the open IMAP email standard both apps run on, whereas new Twitter features do affect an app like Tweetbot. "Getting locked out? It?s not something we worry much about," Underwood says. "It?s about how we can create the best experience possible around managing mail ? by using our agility to do it better than anybody else." Underwood admits that competing with Gmail apps is tough without a desktop app. He and his team are still toying with ideas for how Mailbox on desktops should work, ranging from a Gmail extension (a la Boomerang) to a full-fledged desktop app for Mac and PC. "The jury?s still out, but we need to do it," he says. And yes, he says, Mailbox for Android is in the works.

For those looking for the absolute fastest email experience on iPhone and iPad, Mailbox is still the best option, but it faces an uphill battle against the increasingly design-conscious Google. Powered by Dropbox, Mailbox may move forward unencumbered by server outages, but Google appears more motivated than ever to take its consumer experiences like email and messaging to the next level.

Kim Dotcom Claims He Invented Two-Factor Authentication

Yesterday, Twitter finally got two-factor authentication?which was enough to prompt Kim Dotcom to claim that he invented the technique.

Taking to Twitter, the man behind Mega pointed out a patent from 1997 which he claims is proof that two-step security is, in fact, his idea. He went further, accusing companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter of infringing rights:

Google, Facebook, Twitter, Citibank, etc. offer Two-Step-Authentication. Massive IP infringement by U.S. companies. My innovation. My patent

Kindly, he's also explained that he decided early on not to sue any of these sites?though he isn't sure he can hold out much longer:

I never sued them. I believe in sharing knowledge & ideas for the good of society. But I might sue them now cause of what the U.S. did to me

The obvious question to ask here is: how much truth is there in Dotcom's claims? Arguably there are plenty of people who could try and lay claim to the system, but the patent which he points to seems legitimate enough.

Dating way back to 1997, it still accurately describes a system where a secondary access code is delivered by SMS. That could be difficult to beat. It'll be interesting to see if any other, similar claims creep out of the woodwork, that date back more than 16 years. [Twitter via Verge]
